Lucas Berghahn Closs

Co-founder · Executive Director

Lucas Berghahn Closs is a young researcher who began his scientific journey at the age of 12. Since then, he has developed multiple research projects, earning international recognition and awards at major science fairs, including Mostratec. His work has been widely recognized in Brazil, including achieving one of the top engineering projects at a leading national science fair hosted at the University of São Paulo, as well as securing first place in Biological Sciences at another national competition. Lucas is currently developing a long-term research project that has been in progress for over five years and is now being transformed into a startup, having already received more than 30 awards across Latin America. He has been recognized by the Brazilian Association for the Promotion of Science and is a member of the Latin American Academy of Leadership. In addition, he was selected for the Yale Young Global Scholars 2026 program. Lucas has also developed a research paper with a mentor from the University of Alberta through a full scholarship provided by Lumiere Education. Known for his innovative approach, he is widely recognized for his most prominent project, which earned him the nickname “the pineapple boy.”

Alexia Scherer Lauxen

Co-founder · Academic Director

Alexia Scherer Lauxen is a 17-year-old Brazilian student with a strong interest in scientific research. She began her journey in 2023, when she worked for two consecutive years as a translator at MOSTRATEC, the largest science fair in Latin America. Her research debut happened in junior high school, when she conducted a study on gender discrimination in motorsport. This work earned her third place at MOSTRATEC, as well as the nickname “the cars girl” among participants at the science fairs she attended. She was later invited to publish her paper in an international journal, and this experience highlighted the challenges faced by young researchers, particularly those still in school, and motivated her to advocate for greater recognition of student work. In her free time, she enjoys studying foreign languages, combining her interest in communication and culture with a continuous effort to expand her global perspective. This passion not only broadens her understanding of different societies, but also enhances her ability to engage in international and collaborative scientific environments. At ASTRA, she works to ensure that students from all backgrounds have equal opportunities to be heard and valued in the scientific community.
